The mountain village of Gargellen is a ski resort with about 110 inhabitants in Vorarlberg and politically belongs to the village of St. Gallenkirch. The local climate has beneficial effects on the health of residents and visitors. Gargellen lies at an altitude of 1423 meters, is the highest city in the Montafon area. The most important industry today is tourism. The name of the place means something like "vortex" and allegedly comes from Romansh. Northwest of Gargellen lies the Rongg waterfall, near which leads a short but challenging ferrata.
The winter sports season runs, depending on the weather conditions, from December to mid-April of the following year. It is a top destination, in winter with the certainty of snow and also the possibility to rent in both seasons. The resort is located in the Vorarlberg ski area and offers skiers 140 kilometers on 85 slopes. It was created by connecting the original areas of Hochjok and Nova.
Gargellen has a ski area, which can be reached from the southern edge of the village via the Schafbergbahn (1,423-2,130 m). The ski area has 8 lifts, including a panoramic 8-seater cable car, 2-seater chairlifts, 4-seater chairlifts, 6-seater chairlifts, 3 ski lifts and cable cars. In addition to the slopes, the ski area offers an amusement park above the mountain station.
There are 26 km of perfectly groomed blue slopes with deep powder for sports fans, snowboarders and skiers. From each slope you can enjoy wonderful views and you can enjoy 10 km of red and 11 km of black slopes. As soon as more snow falls in Gargelland, freeride enthusiasts come here from far and wide. Beautiful trails will enchant fans of snowshoes and cross-country skis.
Gargellen has its own ski school, which offers tourists ski lessons during the winter season. There is a separate training area for preschool children on the eastern edge of the village. There is also a cable car with its own downhill run in the ski area for beginners.
Several mountains can be reached from Gargellen on marked hiking trails such as the Heimspitze (2,685 m) and the Riedkopf (2,552 m). Via the Schafbergbahn and Gafierjoch mountain stations (2,415 m) you can ascend to the Swiss side to Rätschenfluh (2,703 m) and Madrisahorn. More demanding hikes on unmarked paths or climbs lead to the Schlappiner Spitze (2,442 m) and Madrisa (2,770 m). From Gargellen you can head south to the Vergalden and Valzifenz valleys.
